A Life Cycle in Chun Yeung

Community Placemaking Program
“A Cycle of life in Chun Yeung” is a community-based architectural installation designed, built, and operated by our studio as part of the exhibition for the Via North Point Festival in Hong Kong.

Chun Yeung Market is one of HK’s best-known street markets since the 1970s. The market is vibrantly diverse yet complicated with hygiene issues and daily chaos. The installation comprises rows of timber decking weaving around to preserve existing trees and furniture while doubling the public seatings. Such large sculptural timber platform redefines the space for the public to enjoy and hang out. Giving the community a nudge, underneath the timber platform is a waste-to-energy station where local communities are encouraged to drop off their household food waste for recycling.

The hustles and bustles of manoeuvring trams, markets and neighbourhoods in Chun Yeung Street, choreograph a unique local spectacle of Hong Kong. The vibrant Chun Yeung neighbourhood enlivened by North Point-ers daily living scenes, stages a collective space for the local community. For many years, old North Point-ers have gathered in the open space adjacent to the tram station, watching trams entering the market and chatting jovially about their daily lives. “A Cycle of Life in Chun Yeung” curates the sense of ownership through placemaking of an interactive spatial piece. Not only preserving the original resting area in the architectural design, new and more seating space is created. The space also initiates the end of one lifecycle – food residual collected from Chun Yeung Street, to be regenerated as a new source of energy to activate the beginning of a communal space for all to meet and connect. A series of community collaboration will be launched, ranging from street station, workshop to compost collection program.

In the compost collection program, food waste will be collected from participated neighbourhoods regularly and will transform into organic compost. In addition, participants can learn the knowledge of compost and organic planting in a workshop in which the plants decorated by the participants will integrate as part of the installation eventually. As a result of synergy effect and active participation of North Point-ers, “A Cycle of Life in Chun Yeung” would be a place of uniting the community and promoting the sense of environmental protection.
